Applications open for Digital SPARK Challenge 2024ASEAN Main Portal

JAKARTA, 26 August 2024 – Indonesia as Chair of the ASEAN Task Force on Fake News (TFFN) and Australia are pleased to invite youth aged 18 – 25 from the ASEAN Member States (AMS), Timor-Leste and Australia to submit their application to join the Digital SPARK Challenge 2024 (the ‘Ideathon’).

The Ideathon, which will take place on 30 September – 3 October in Jakarta, aims to provide a platform for youth from AMS, Timor-Leste and Australia to exchange views and pitch their ideas on innovative ways to address fake news and its impacts through social media campaigns.

Through a 4-day immersive workshop, up to 24 teams of two (two teams from each participating country) will be invited to develop a deeper understanding on fake news identification and mitigation, as well as its impacts to society, and be equipped with communication and advocacy tools to address them.

Participants will be guided through a collaborative and participatory learning process to develop ideas for powerful online campaigns to address this issue. Selected experts will serve as on-site mentors and judges, and the winning team will be further supported to implement their campaign idea.

The Ideathon will focus on two main themes: fake news, such as misinformation, disinformation, and content manipulation, such as AI-generated contents, deepfakes. Other important issues such as hate speech, online bullying, privacy violation and online scams can also be covered as they relate to the main themes.

Co-hosted by Indonesia and Australia, the Ideathon is held in collaboration with The Asia Foundation and Love Frankie as the organising committee.

The first-place winner will be awarded a grant funding and ongoing mentorship support for the campaign implementation, and their campaign will be amplified and integrated through ASEAN’s official communication channels.

Detailed information and the online registration form can be found in the Call for Applications here. The deadline for application is 8 September 2024.
